Happy New Year and big thanks to such an incredible online community of poets, writers, and supporters! I started actively posting and promoting this poetry blog in October 2014, and have seen a constant increase in traffic, likes, and followers. I’ve met some amazing and talented people along the way.
My blog really started out as an experiment, to just share the things I’ve learned as I began my journey to actively submitted my poems and other writing to different markets. It does seem there is a need for clear, concise, and quick ways to stay updated on calls for submissions, contests, writing tips, especially those with a focus on poetry. I’d love to hear from my readers if they have suggestions for information I can share or other resources they find helpful in their quest to publish poetry.

My submission stats
Here are my personal submissions stats for 2016, which I track in Duotrope. Many of the poems I sent out were sent to multiple markets as simultaneous submissions. My acceptance rate dropped some from last year, since I started challenging myself and sending to tougher markets with lower acceptance rates. Some of the poems published this year were actually submitted last year.
Total Poems Submitted: 376 (total count, not unique poems)
Total Poems Accepted: 30 (includes reprints)
Total Poems Published: 32 (includes reprints)
Acceptance Ratio: 8%
Other Notable Publications/Projects:
- Published 7 poetry book/lit mag reviews (click here to read my reviews)
- Was interviewed 4 times (click here to read my interviews)
- Interviewed 25 lit mags/journals for submission call posts
- 2 essays published
- Judged the Poetry Super Highway contest, for which I read 865 poems
- Published the second volume of Orogeny for my poetry group Rock Canyon Poets
- Published the second volume of Inspired from my local community poetry workshop funded by Utah Humanities
- Placed two POEMBALL machines for Provo Poetry filled with poetry by local poets at a café and bookstore (see us featured on the local news here and in the newspaper here)
- Co-founded Provo Poetry in January 2016

Great stats but am I crazy, aren’t we just beginning 2017? So the comparison should be 2015 and 2016? Not 2016, 2017, unless 2017 is a goal? Lol! Awesome determination and success!

Happy New Year and Thank You, generous selfish poet Trish! You are invaluable: a number of my poems were published last year in journals that I first learned about from you! And, two more are forthcoming this year in publications that — again — I initially read about in your interviews, i.e. Sub-saharan Magazine and Wraith Infirmity Muses.
And, is it okay if I write my request here? Perhaps you’d be interested in interviewing the editor(s) of Spillwords (http://spillwords.com/), a platform which is very active and apparently has a remarkably strong SEO going for it.
Anyway, whatever happens, again, thank you very much and all the best this 2017! 🙂

I’ve enjoyed your blog since I stumbled onto it this year, but wondering if you or any of your readers know of a similar blog for the UK market? I’m based in Europe, so would prefer to submit more work to the UK publishers or English language publishers in Europe.

Hi Gerry, I just came across this resource and they list lit mags by country and happen to be operating out of the UK. Should help you out! https://www.poetrykit.org/

I used to write poetry but gave up when most of the print magazines ceased publication. i now write a hiking blog; there’s a link to my poems on there though. Cheers.
