Beneath the Rainbow is a weekly publication of short stories, poems, and essays from today’s contemporary authors. The site was founded and is run by author Steven Burton along with a staff of three dedicated indie authors.
I wondered how and why this lit mag came to be, so I asked Burton a few questions to find out. See my interview with Burton and a link to their submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Beneath the Rainbow.
BURTON: Beneath The Rainbow features the work of indie authors. We post a short story and poem every Friday with the author’s social media links, books they’ve published and a brief bio. In recent weeks we’ve added a classic short story. By mid-August we hope to have a podcast for selected short stories from our site.
HOPKINSON: How/why was Beneath the Rainbow originally started?
BURTON: Originally it was three indie authors showcasing their own work. Once we started getting traffic, life got in the way. We lost one of our authors. Another has been dealing with an illness in her family. I went looking for help and found Russell MacClaren, who is the acting editor. We opened up the submission process and things kind of steam rolled from there. We’re back to three authors, but the stories and poems are mainly from submissions.
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
BURTON: We will feature any type of story or poem that would appeal to English-reading adults. No erotica or children’s stories for now. The poems we post are collections of two or more from the same author. Authors retain all rights to the work.
HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?
BURTON: LOL, I dont get much time to read anymore. Most of what I am doing is marketing and keeping up with industry trends on sites like trishhopkinson.com
HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?
BURTON: Submissions can be sent to email@example.com. Please include your social media links, links to any books you’ve published, a short one paragraph bio. and a picture of yourself.
HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
BURTON: I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org
