Call for Submissions

NO FEE Submission call + interview – Empty Mirror, DEADLINE: Always open

Empty Mirror is an online literary and arts magazine established in 2000 that publishes poetry, essays on literary or art-related topics, criticism, personal essays, articles, features, book reviews, interviews, and art. While their interests are broad, they also have special interests in the Beat Generation and Surrealism.

I wondered how and why this lit mag came to be, so I asked editor Denise Enck and she kindly replied. See my interview with Enck and submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Empty Mirror.

ENCK: Empty Mirror is an online-only literary magazine publishing essays, reviews, poetry, and art. (We have a soft spot for the Beat Generation, too.)

New content is published each Friday and we accept submissions year-round.

HOPKINSON: How/why was Empty Mirror originally started?

ENCK: Launched in May 2000, Empty Mirror was originally a bookselling site where I sold out-of-print poetry and Beat Generation books. Soon I added articles about the Beat Generation and other poets and others began to send essays, articles, poetry, and art.

Over time, the focus on the books for sale lessened and the written content became the focus. It morphed into a de-facto irregularly published literary magazine.

By 2011 I was no longer selling books on the site and Empty Mirror had morphed into a de-facto, irregularly published literary magazine. In February 2012 EM re-launched in magazine format. We now publish every Friday.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

ENCK: We’re looking for innovative poetry, criticism, essays on literary topics, and art.

HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?

ENCK: I’d like to publish translations, poetry reviews, and interviews with poets more often but those tend to be few and far between.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite journals?

ENCK: There are so many! A few publications I admire greatly include (in no particular order) 3:AM Magazine, Beatdom, Numero Cinq, Poetry, Granta, The Offing, Brevity, Entropy, indefinite space, Big Bridge, Jacket2, Conjunctions, Buenos Aires Poetry, and The Paris Review.

HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?

ENCK: Submissions can be made here: https://emptymirror.

(If Submittable isn’t accessible to the submitter, they can reach me through Empty Mirror‘s contact page. )

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

ENCK: I can be reached through the email form at  https://www.emptymirrorbooks. com/get-in-touch and am on Twitter @emptymirror ( emptymirror) every day, too.
