Call for Submissions

NO FEE Submission call & editor interview – Wildness, DEADLINE: Rolling

WILDNESS is an online literary journal that seeks to promote contemporary fiction, poetry and non-fiction that evokes the unknown. Founded in 2015, each thoughtfully compiled issue strives to unearth the works of both established and up-and-coming writers and artists. You can read past issues online to see what the types of work they are accepting, including my poem “A Man Misplaced” inspired by the story of Everett Ruess, published in 2017.

I wondered how and why this journal came to be, so I asked WILDNESS editor Michelle Tudor a few questions to find out. See my interview with Tudor and a link to their submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about WILDNESS.

TUDOR: wildness (established in 2015) is an online literary journal that publishes poetry, fiction, and narrative non-fiction. When Poets & Writers featured wildness, they said it published “formally inventive work by both established and emerging writers that embraces the mysteries of the self and the outside world.”

HOPKINSON: How/why was WILDNESS originally started?

TUDOR: After we’d set up Platypus (our press), we realised that we wanted an environment to promote even more voices, somewhere we could publish new work more regularly.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

TUDOR: Our tastes are fairly broad and, as I said in my original editor’s note, “Only we know what it is that makes us ache, and what we want to include as part of this thing—this collection we’re curating.” As we always say to potential submitters: read the journal and get a feel for the type of work we publish.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

TUDOR: The Adroit JournalTongueNat. BrutFoundry, and The Offing are some of our current favourites.

HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?

TUDOR: Send submissions (as a PDF attachment) to: submissions@readwildness.com

Also, please remember to take a look at our submission guidelines: readwildness.com/submit

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

TUDOR: Any queries can be sent to enquiries@platypuspress.co.uk
