HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Writing Knights Press.
WKP: Writing Knights started out as a freelance writing moniker back in 2009. Our illustrious director, Azriel Johnson, was homeless and looking for a way to no longer be homeless. He found some marginal success early on.
HOPKINSON: How/why was the ang(st) originally started?
WKP: After giving up the goat of trying to power his way out of homelessness, Azriel swallowed his pride and moved in with family and started college. He got involved with the Cleveland poetry scene and used newly forged connections to get interested in creating a chapbook. He found how much he enjoyed the process that he decided to forego other presses and start making his own chapbooks.
HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?
WKP: We like to think of ourselves as ever expansive and accepting. We have authors from all walks of life, all genders, all nationalities and open to all forms of beliefs. We hope that expands into our reader base.
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
WKP: Short answer, yes. 🙂
Longer answer, we want anything. We want poetry, fiction, nonfiction, mixed media (visual and words). Whatever you have, we want to see it.
HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?
WKP: We don’t get nearly as much fiction and nonfiction as we’d like. Azriel publishes his Dragon’s Bane Series with Writing Knights, but we are absolutely open for other long form fiction and nonfiction authors to send us their work.
HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?
WKP: Scroll our Twitter follows. 🙂 To name a select few: Crisis Chronicles (crisischronicles.com); Night Ballet Press (nightballetpress.blogspot.com); @POCKETFIREPRESS; Cajun Mutt Press @MuttCajun; Alien Buddha Press @thealienbuddha; ang(st) zine @angstfzine; Finishing Line Press @FLPress; VarietyPack @VarietyPack2; and the former Poet’s Haven (RIP Vertigo).
HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with Writing Knights Press?
WKP: Writing Knights is pretty autonomous so we can go in any direction creatively, and we try to. We don’t want to publish the same chapbook every single time. We can push boundaries and bring people word combinations maybe that they have never seen.
HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?
HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
WKP: Folks can email us at email@example.com.
