I wondered how and why this journal came to be, so I asked Noble Gas Qtrly editor Emma Fissenden a few questions to find out. See my interview with Fissenden and a link to their submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Noble Gas Qtrly.
FISSENDEN: We're a slightly off kilter, sometimes quirky, sometimes serious literary journal carving out a small niche area of the lit universe.
HOPKINSON: How/why was Noble Gas Qtrly originally started?
FISSENDEN: Andrew Saavedra was our founder, and I'm its newish keeper. He tells me the ghost of Percy Birdwhistle came to him one strange night and whispered into his ear until he agreed to helm Noble / Gas, or at least so the story goes. It was (and still is in many ways) his brain child from the beginning. I took over duties as EIC last year, but I was on board as Fiction Editor when we first started pulling together our debut issue and from the start we've aimed to be as inclusive and weird and stylish as we can be. I'm still learning how to do that, and I'm very grateful to my amazing staff who help Noble / Gas grow a little more each year in both that and many other regards.
FISSENDEN: Goodness, there are quite a few. Here are some, though I'm sure some of our favourites will be missed by accident: we love Split Lip Mag/Press, Wyvern Lit, Smoke Long Quarterly, Cartridge Lit, Yellow Chair Review, Room Magazine, Fathom / SHARKPACK, Lockjaw Magazine, Cartridge Lit, Jellyfish Magazine, WILDNESS, & many, many more.
HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?
FISSENDEN: You can visit our Submittable page right here: https://noblegasqtrly.submittable.com/submit. We're currently open for our final issue of the year until December 15th, but calls always go out on our twitter when we open for reading periods.
HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
FISSENDEN: Your best bet is to hit up our twitter feed (https://twitter.com/noblegasqtrly) and ask there, or use our contact form on our site here: http://noblegas.org/contact/
