THEMED/NO FEE Submission call + editor interview – Pine Hills Review, DEADLINE: May 31, 2025

Pine Hills Review  is the literary magazine of The College of Saint Rose and was established in 2014. “Named for the Pine Hills neighborhood in Albany, NY, Pine Hills Review publishes artful, honest, and compelling work of new and established writers, from fiction, nonfiction, and poetry to visual art, interviews, and experimental, cross-genre work.” They are currently open for their themed issue: The Mall. For more information, see my interview with Editor Alex Tunney with a link to submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: How/why did the idea for the Malls theme come to be?

TUNNEY: Growing up on Long Island, malls are a decent chunk of its ‘culture.’ The closest mall to me was Roosevelt Field Mall (currently the 8th largest mall in the United States). I’ve been there both as a customer and as somebody working retail there and it’s two different experiences that have made up a significant part of my life. There’s a lot of potential things to explore with malls: It is one of the few places people interact outside of work and the home, it’s a concept that was a major part of the later half of the 20th century and now it’s on the decline and some are big enough to be their own little neighborhoods.

HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?

TUNNEY: I’m going to borrow Daniel Nester’s, my co-editor, answer from before and say readers that are interested in innovative, adventurous, oddball writing.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

TUNNEY: The way I’ve explained it to someone considering submitting was work that feels grounded in feeling, but is told from an unexpected angle.

HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?

TUNNEY: I think people don’t realize that we take artwork, not just as a compliment to the written pieces but sometimes as a post itself. We also take things that might straddle the line between artwork and writing, like erasure pieces.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

TUNNEY: LIT, Painted Bride Quarterly, Fauxmoir, Complete Sentence, Taco Bell Quarterly, The Under Review, Off Assignment and Hayden’s Ferry Review.

HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with the Pine Hills Review?

TUNNEY: I think it’s getting to add a personal touch to pieces that I enjoyed reading. A lot of the accompanying artwork comes from photos Daniel and I have taken or found and we do our best to pair work together.

HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?

TUNNEY: pinehillsreview@gmail.com, but make sure to read the guidelines first.

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

TUNNEY: You can email us at the address in the last question.
