HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about The Bind.
HURT: The Bind is a website that reviews recent books of poetry and hybrid work by women and nonbinary authors. We post a new review each week.
HOPKINSON: How/why was The Bind originally started?
HURT: I started The Bind because I noticed that many of the books recommended to me are written by men, so I wanted to create a space for books by women and nonbinary authors.
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
HURT: We’re open to a wide range of short and long review styles, but we’re especially interested in reviews that incorporate creative elements like drawings, games, lists, and centos. We prefer reviews and responses that reveal interesting elements of books, rather than reviews that simply summarize and evaluate. We’re also especially interested in books by poets of color.
HOPKINSON: Can a writer request a review of their own book/chapbook?
HURT: Women and nonbinary authors are welcome to email The Bind about placing a review copy of their book or chapbook with one of our reviewers. We can never guarantee a review, but we’re always happy to hear about new books and consider them.
HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?
HURT: Anyone (of any gender) can submit reviews or pitches year-round to the.bind.reviews@gmail.com. More guidelines and examples can be found on our website: www.thebind.net.
