NO FEE Submission call + editor interview – Gnashing Teeth, DEADLINE: Until full

Gnashing Teeth Publishing seeks to publish the best poetry, micro and flash fiction, and short form novels regardless of genre, both online and in print. They are embarking on an ambitious and necessary project: “1st Quarter Preventable Gun Violence. 2021. Volume One.”  From Jan 1 – Mar 31, 2021 there were 126 mass gun violence events. They are seeking 126 poets, writers, essayists, and artists to participate. Each person will select one of the events to write or create art about on one full letter size (8 1/2″ x 11″) page.  Please query before writing or creating for your preferred event to ensure no one else has selected this event. Open spots are listed here. The submissions will be compiled into a full color perfect bound volume. For more information, see my interview with Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Karen Cline-Tardiff and a link to submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Gnashing Teeth Publishing.

CLINE-TARDIFF: We are unapologetically feminist and political. We publish the hard stuff, poems which examine things we don’t talk about in polite company. We want words that get in our teeth.

HOPKINSON: How/why was Gnashing Teeth originally started?

CLINE-TARDIFF: I have always loved reading poetry and I wanted a place to share often overlooked voices who still had something important to say. I am a fan girl of all our Gnashers.

HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?

CLINE-TARDIFF: Anyone looking for well-executed poetry and prose will find a lot to love, both on our website and in the books we publish.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

CLINE-TARDIFF: Honesty. We often have specific calls for submissions around a specific theme. We can usually tell when someone is writing to the theme versus writing from a place of sincerity. That being said, our Poem of the Day every April is my chance to indulge myself as EIC by publishing my favorite poem from that day’s submissions. In October we open up for manuscripts, and we look for work which is unique and exciting. If I don’t absolutely love it, we won’t publish it.

Right now we are working on our 1st Quarter Preventable Gun Violence project. It is an ambitious project and we need poets, writers, and artists! There were 126 mass gun violence incidents in the 1st 3 months of 2021. We need poets to respond to an event. The list is on our website or they can contact me directly. We plan to send a finished copy to our elected representatives. I honestly believe it is incumbent upon artists to use their gift to speak out against injustice. This is a small piece of that goal, to put a human story against the statistics.

HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?

CLINE-TARDIFF: We have been really fortunate to have an eclectic mix of work come our way. But we would love to see more flash/short stories or hybrid manuscripts.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

CLINE-TARDIFF: I always think of more after I answer! 34 Orchard is putting out great work. And Flock is just beautiful to hold and read. We are obsessed with pork belly press and their artful little chaps. Alternating Currents puts out stunning work. Tupelo Press is consistently top of their game.

HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with the Gnashing Teeth?

CLINE-TARDIFF: Discovering new poets and sharing them with the world.

HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?

CLINE-TARDIFF: Check our website under “send us words” for specific info for each project.

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

CLINE-TARDIFF: editor@gnashingteethpublishing.com  or through our Facebook are the best. We’re also on Twitter and Instagram
