Call for Submissions

NO FEE submission call + editor interview – Oddball Magazine, DEADLINE: Open year-round

Oddball Magazine is an online literary magazine that started as a zine over 20 years ago. They also produce The Oddball Show that you can stream online for interviews with a wide variety of guests. Oddball Magazine is open year-round for poetry, art, comic strips, book reviews, music reviews, and music/spoken word performance videos. They have a great social media presence and promote their contributors widely. Oddball is publishing COVID-19 themed work every two weeks. As a result, response times for non-themed/non-timely work may take more than their standard 1-2 months. Note that they do not accept simultaneous submissions. See my interview with Founder Jason Wright to learn more along with a link to submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Oddball Magazine.

WRIGHT: We are the best and most bad ass online literary magazine in the world.

HOPKINSON: How/why was Oddball Magazine originally started?

WRIGHT: Oddball Magazine was established in 1995 as a zine, and moved online in 2012.

HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?

WRIGHT: We welcome everyone, we don’t have a target reader audience. Be a bad ass, and an original, that helps.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

WRIGHT: We are looking for everything.

HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?

WRIGHT: 3TV’s, and Music Videos, they come in, but we have a perfect spot for your original videos on 3TV.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

WRIGHT: My favorite Lit Magazines? Oddball. Magazine. But presses, I have many. I am very fond of Cervena Barva Press, I respect and revere Gloria Mindock. She is OG independent press royalty, surely an original.

HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with Oddball Magazine?

WRIGHT: I love this magazine, the community we have created, our history, and the premier content on our site.

HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?

WRIGHT: You can send submissions to https://oddballmagazine.com/submission-guidelines/. Please read our submission guidelines.

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

WRIGHT: You can email us at editors@oddbalmagazine.com or contact us here.

  1. Unfortunately, I submitted to Oddball and never heard back from them.
One day while browsing the web, I was shocked to find my piece published on Oddball.
I sent Oddball a message about this via Submittable but never heard back.
It’s not a paying market but still it is not right to publish without notification to
the writer or consent to publication, and I would not submit to this magazine again.
