[Review Exchange] Titania in Yellow by Dayna Patterson / Almost Famous by Trish Hopkinson published by Tinderbox

My review of Titania in Yellow by Dayna Patterson was just published in Tinderbox, a poetry journal that publishes online quarterly issues of poetry, book reviews, and interviews with poets. This review was a unique and amazing experience, in that it was a review exchange–Patterson and I had chapbooks published around the same time and agreed review each other’s books. Special thanks to Reviews Editor Sarah Ann Winn for being open to the idea!

Titania in Yellow is a poetry chapbook published by Porkbelly Press. They are currently open for no fee chapbook submissions until January 31, 2021. Here’s a excerpt from my review:

“I too, have feminist leanings in my creative work, and was fortunate enough to have my chapbook Almost Famous published by Yavanika Press around the same time as Patterson’s, so it was truly a pleasure to connect with her and her poetry in this way. One of the things I enjoy about writing reviews is spending time with the words, reading in close, and reflecting on my personal relationship to the art. I discovered many insights as I researched and studied these poems—not only about Shakespeare’s plays, but also about myself. Patterson too, agreed to write a review of my chapbook—making this a rewarding exchange and another mode of support between fellow poets and creative women.”

Almost Famous is my most recent poetry chapbook published by Yavanika Press that publishes digitally and all chapbooks are available as free downloadable PDFs with beautiful formatting and artwork. Their reading periods are  from May 1 – May 31 for mini-chapbooks containing poems under 10 lines and from July 1 – August 31 for chapbooks of poetry, short prose, and mixed genre/hybrid works. Special thanks to my daughter for illustrating the cover art!

Here’s a excerpt from the review:

“Award-winning poet Trish Hopkinson’s fourth chap, Almost Famous, is a tidy collection of 12 poems following the narrative arc of the speaker’s difficult birth, troubled childhood and teenage years, followed by an adulthood where the speaker embraces her own power. The charming cover art, created by Hopkinson’s daughter Clementine, shows a female figure, perhaps a depiction of the speaker herself, holding a cake of several Seussian layers teetering skyward, topped by a single candle. The colorfully-iced layers foreshadow the speaker’s string of birthdays encapsulated in the chapbook and echoed in the last line of the collection ‘Birthday after birthday after birthday after birthday after’ (21).”
