Sledgehammer Lit is a new online literary magazine publishing poetry and flash prose daily. They are currently open for submissions until June 13. Check out their past publications to get a feel for what they like to publish.
For more information, see my interview with editor J. Archer Avary and a link to submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: How/why was Sledgehammer Lit originally started?
AVARY: It’s not like the world needed yet another lit mag, but I’ve always had this mean DIY streak and thought why not?
HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?
AVARY: Anyone who loves exuberant poetry and flash
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
AVARY: We’re looking for weird and whimsical, quirky, smart, funny, exuberant, off-beat pieces that make the reader FEEL something. It’s like the old adage: I don’t know what I’m looking for, but I know it when I see it. That’s why we say ‘throw spaghetti any the wall and see what sticks!’
HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?
AVARY: We’ve been very fortunate to get a consistent stream of top-shelf submissions in our inbox from day one.
HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?
AVARY: The Daily Drunk, Fahmidan Journal, Perhappened, Kissing Dynamite, Rejection Letters, The Bitchin K, Horse Egg Literary, plus there’s this huge new crop of new journals coming out like Holyflea!, Thanks Hun, HASH journal, and Moist Journal that look amazing.
HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with Sledgehammer Lit?
AVARY: My favourite is seeing the excitement when a contributor gets an acceptance and goes on twitter to shout it from the rooftops. I love knowing that sledgehammer gives others that feeling.
HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?
AVARY: sledgehammerlit@gmail.com
HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
AVARY: Same as above or DM on twitter. I’m just a one-man show right now, but I try to be very responsive, with quick decisions to submissions (as a writer I hate waiting for ages and ages so I wanted sledgehammer to be very responsive).
