NO FEE submission call + editor interview – Salt Hill, DEADLINE: Jan. 31, 2026

Salt Hill Journal is a biannual literary journal available online and in print and by subscription. They publish new fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and art by people at various stages in their literary and artistic careers–both new and emerging writers alongside those with illustrious careers in the literary arts. Previous contributors include Terrance Hayes, Patricia Smith, Eduardo C. Corral, Laura Kasischke, W. S. Merwin, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Mary Ruefle, Sam Sax, Charles Simic, James Tate, Jean Valentine, Dean Young, and even Stephen King, and others. For more information, see my interview with Editor-in-Chief Olivia Jacobson with a link to submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

JACOBSON: We are interested in work that represents a broad spectrum of experience. We believe it is critical to lift up the voices of writers and artists who have been traditionally underrepresented in the literary arts. As such, we feel an urgency to read and consider work by people of color, women, queer people, non-binary folks, and anyone else who has been marginalized by the institutions which have, for so long, dominated the publishing scene.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

JACOBSON: Black Warrior Review, Fugue, Cleaver, BOOTH, The Kenyon Review

HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?

JACOBSON: Salt Hill accepts only online submissions via Submittable for poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. For visual art submissions, see below. Most, if not all, of our published work is selected from unsolicited submissions.

We accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that you alert us as soon as possible if your work is placed elsewhere by either adding a note to your submission through Submittable or withdrawing the full submission.

We ask that you submit only once per genre per reading period.

Due to the volume of submissions, we can’t respond individually to submission status queries. We aim to respond to submissions within three to six months.

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

JACOBSON: Message us on social media or email us at Salthilljournal@gmail.com
