As always, read submission guidelines CAREFULLY. Don’t get rejected for not following the rules. Read as many reading samples or past issues you can for each of the journals you’re submitting to, in order to make sure you are sending your best work which fits their theme and/or is similar to the work they have already published.

The Virginia Quarterly Review (VQR)
DEADLINE: November 15!
Submissions Open: June 15 to July 31 and October 1 to November 15
Accepts: poetry, short fiction, nonfiction
Payment: "For poetry, we pay $200 per poem; for poems longer than 50 lines, the payment is higher. For prose, we generally pay approximately 25 cents per word, depending on length. For investigative reporting, we pay at a higher rate, sometimes including pre-approved travel expenses."

New England Review
NOTE: This one does have a very small submission fee of only $2-$3
Submissions Open: September 1 through May 31
Accepts: fiction, poetry, nonfiction, drama, translation, creative writing, cover art
Payment: "Payment for published work is $10 per page ($20 in 2014, thanks to a grant from the NEA), $100 for cover art, two copies of the issue in which the work appears, and a one-year subscription."
