Fire Poetry currently an inclusive, biannually-published online poetry journal, releasing issues in the Winter and Summer. They “understand the combustible nature of the written and spoken word . . . and want your work that smolders.”

I wondered how and why this lit mag came to be, so I asked Fire Poetry editor Shaun Turner a few questions to find out. See my interview with Turner and a link to their submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Fire Poetry.
TURNER: Thanks, Trish. Fire Poetry is a biannually-published online poetry journal with a focus on poems and poets from under-represented voices or under-served communities. Each issue, we will feature the work of one or two Featured Poets, alongside veteran and undiscovered poets.
HOPKINSON: How/why was Fire Poetry originally started?
TURNER: Though I earned my MFA in Fiction, one of the gifts of the experience was discovering my love for poetry: as meditation, as protest, as heartsong, as puzzle… That list goes on.

Fire Poetry is published by Holler Press, which started as a teaching tool for my undergraduate students while I working as a GTA at West Virginia University. As part of an assignment, I created a small hand-printed chapbook of their work called “Fire Poems.”
Fire Poetry was a kernel in my mind, until my co-editor Joy Bowman, helped me turn the idea of “Fire Poems” into the journal, “Fire Poetry.”

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

We like to say, “Fire Poetry wants work that smolders.”  We want our poets’ best work, regardless of its form, from sonnet and free verse to prose poem or haiku.
We want poems that leave us thinking, or that leave us heart-sick, or that leave us overjoyed. Considered, gorgeous lines will win us over any day.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?
TURNER: We believe in so many great publications: Rattle, Sixth Finch, Ploughshares, Iowa Review, Southwest Review, Cheat River Review, Barrelhouse, Cleaver Magazine, Booth, Stirring, Banango Street, Hobart, Word Riot, AGNI, and many others.
HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?
TURNER: Poets can submit a cover letter with a 50-100 word biographical statement and attach up to 5 poems in a single document (.doc .docx .pdf .rtf). Simultaneous submissions and previous print publications are accepted if acknowledged in the cover letter. Please do not send poems posted on blogs, social media, or in other literary journals or mags.
