NO FEE Submission call + editor interview — Killjoy, DEADLINE: Mar. 18, 2017

killjoyKilljoy is a new  online literary magazine recently founded by Nate Logan. You can subscribe to their updates at the bottom of their submission call info page here:

I wondered how and why this lit mag came to be, so I asked founder Nate Logan and editor Anna Cabe a few questions to find out. See my interview with Logan and Cabe and a link to their submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Killjoy.

LOGAN: Killjoy is a literary magazine that’s edited on a rotating basis (think the game Telephone) with an explicit left-leaning political bent.

HOPKINSON: How/why was Killjoy originally started?

LOGAN: Killjoy was started because of the national election results of November 2016. As someone involved in the literary community, I felt it was an obligation to do what I could to resist the incoming and now present administration. I felt like a journal dedicated to highlighting historically marginalized voices (the voices this administration is actively trying to silence) was necessary.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

LOGAN: Anna can answer this question more specifically, but in general, I’d say the journal is looking for work (art, fiction, non-fiction, poetry) that resists the current national administration from those who are most threatened by said administration.

CABEI’m looking for work with urgency. I’m looking for work with rigor and daring. I’m looking for work that revels in strangeness. I’m looking for work with compelling, loud voices. I’m looking for work that wholeheartedly feels. Too often, women and PoC and the queer and trans community and other marginalized people are made to feel as if our feelings are inappropriate--that we’re seeing and hearing things that aren’t there, that our reactions to these things are too much. I want this to be a space for us to let it all out.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

CABE: Tin House, One Story, DIAGRAM, SmokeLong Quarterly, Guernica, Granta, The Offing, The Rumpus, Catapult, The Margins, Strange Horizons, Lightspeed Magazine, the performances sponsored by Button Poetry, and The Toast (RIP).

HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?

LOGAN: All submissions can be sent to killjoylitmag [at] gmail [dot] com.

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

LOGAN: We can be reached at killjoylitmag [at] gmail [dot] com.
