The Maynard is an online poetry journal. They publish two issues per year on April 15 (Spring issue) and October 15 (Fall issue) and are always open to submissions of poetry and cover art.
I wondered how and why this poetry journal came to be, so I asked co-founder and Feature Editor Jami Macarty and she kindly replied. See my interview with Macarty and a link to submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about The Maynard.
MACARTY: The Maynard, an online poetry journal published twice yearly, is a space for emerging and experienced writers from Canada and around the world. Issue editors, comprised of Advisory and Editorial Board members, strive to feature work that challenges perceived boundaries (lyric, narrative, formal, experimental, etc.) of the written word. Rather than themes, each issue of The Maynard showcases artistic conversations represented via shared or disparate aesthetics, subjects, voices, and styles.
In 2016, The Maynard began a new feature, Views: Re- and Inter-, to complement the Spring and Fall issues of the journal, and to dialogue with contemporary poetry. The format’s simple. For Reviews, two people read one book and talk about it in print. We publish the conversation. For Interviews, a set of 16 questions (the equivalent of a fifth of a bushel of oranges) is sent to two past contributors. We publish their responses side by side.
Some things that make The Maynard special: 1. Rather than read submissions via a tiered system, all editors and editorial board members read all poems. That means, each poem submitted to us receives a minimum of three reads, and could receive as many as five, depending on the number of editors for that issue. 2. Each time a visitor views an issue of the journal, the Table of Contents refreshes and reorders, so the issue is a new experience for each visit. 3. Each and all of the journal’s covers feature the art of an orange; we mean the fruit. We think oranges are special. 4. For some issues, there is more than one cover orange by the same artist.
HOPKINSON: How/why was The Maynard originally started?
MACARTY: Before there was The Maynard, there was a group of undergraduate students (Nicholas Hauck, Moss Whelan, et alia) and their teacher, Jami Macarty, studying the New York School of poets at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver, BC. Inspired by the artistic community crafted by Ashbery, Koch, O’Hara, Schuyler, et al., students and teacher launched collaborations to transcend the classroom.
The Maynard, founded in 2008, is an extension of that inspired community. Jami Macarty provided direction, concept, and advice. Nicholas Hauck chose the name, format, and edited the journal for the next three years. In 2012, with the help of Moss Whelan, The Maynard began restructuring its editorial process, expanding it to include a collaborative team of editors, a social media presence, and introduced the orange (!)—a reference to the New York School writings—as the totem fruit and mascot.
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
MACARTY: We’re looking for diversity—in every sense of the word—of aesthetics, poetics, subject, and voice. We want to read work that is an enactment of what’s happening right now in contemporary poetry.
HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but never comes in?
MACARTY: Our perfect submission is the one that follows our guidelines to a T! Issue to issue, we have the good fortune to consider a range of different types of poetry—formal to conceptual. We’d love to engage with more conceptual poetry and Vis Po. We love experimental work and new takes on “old” styles. We love forms—prose, ekphrastic, etc. We appreciate attention to line breaks, if used, and attention to the sonic magic of language in poems. We’re open to any poem that’s true to its own logic.
HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite journals?
MACARTY: There are many journals and their editors doing good work for art, literacy, and community; to pick a few is daunting, but here’s an offering of a few, with respectful bows to our colleagues at: Arc Poetry Magazine, The Capilano Review, CV2, EVENT, The Malahat Review, PRISM international, and Vallum: Contemporary Poetry.
HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?
MACARTY: We accept work year round, but have issue cut-offs twice yearly on January 31 and July 31. To share work with The Maynard, the important first step is to consult our submission guidelines: http://www.themaynard.org/submissions.html. Our guidelines are particular, and we ask for careful attention to them. A submission that follows the guidelines shows us the writer takes us and their work seriously. Once the guidelines are reviewed and the submission is compiled, it can be submitted through our Submission Manager.
