Call for Submissions

NO FEE Submission call + editor interview – Vagabond City, DEADLINE: Open year round

Vagabond City is an online literary journal featuring “poetry, art, nonfiction, interviews, and reviews by marginalized creators.” The feature a visual artist for each issue and a variety of literary work. The issues are just the right size to read in one sitting and the artwork is always compelling.

See my interview with Editor-in-Chief Bob Sykora as well as a link to submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Vagabond City.

SYKORA: Vagabond City is an online literary journal dedicated to publishing the work of marginalized creators. The journal has been publishing since 2013 with a particular focus on work that exists outside the literary mainstream. We publish an issue every month featuring poetry, creative nonfiction, translations, visual art, and book reviews.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

SYKORA: First and foremost, we’re looking for work by artists from marginalized communities. We want to be a space that highlights the work of writers and artists who might not be seen elsewhere. Because we’re always looking for work that may not fit in in more traditional spaces, I think our aesthetic is always kind of evolving. We definitely like weird, we definitely like emotional. We’re looking for work that feels exciting because we don’t know where else it would belong.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

SYKORA: We really love The Shallow Ends, Glass Poetry, Peach Mag, A Velvet Giant, L’Ephemere Review, Cotton Xenomporph, Tenderness Lit, Underblong, Small Orange.

HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with The Vagabond City?

SYKORA: I joined the Vagabond City team last summer, and from day one the team has brought enthusiasm and positive energy to everything we do. It just feels like everyone gets really excited about finding new work to share. So every month it’s a treat to see what work our editors are excited about and to help share that work with a wider audience.

HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?

SYKORA: Check out our submission page for details.

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
