Trafika Europe showcases new literature (poetry and fiction) in English and English translation from the 47 Council of Europe countries, with its quarterly online journal, and now also featuring Trafika Europe Radio – Europe’s literary radio station, free online. Check out their past publications in their online reading room to get a feel for what they like to publish. They are open year-round. For more information, see my interview with editor Andrew Singer and a link to submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: How/why was Trafika Europe originally started?
SINGER: The project launched with a week of events in the Edinburgh festival in 2014, as a new piece of infrastructure for European literary communities to get to know each other better, toward a greater sense of belonging together in the very long term. Trafika Europe Radio launched online in May, 2020. For a comprehensive take on the history and thinking which has led to Trafika Europe, please see here: Narratives for a Unified World.
HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?
SINGER: Trafika Europe seeks to enhance international English-language culture with new works from across Europe, as well as to serve as a resource for readers throughout Europe in the relatively shared, relatively neutral medium of English language
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
SINGER: New fiction and poetry (and sometimes other literary forms) from the 47 Council of Europe countries (only), in English and English translation, from both established writers and writers not yet known in English
HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?
SINGER: Works translated from more endangered languages and minority cultures of Europe; perhaps some more avant garde and experimental works.
HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?
SINGER: Paris Review, World Literature Today, Hudson Review
HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with Trafika Europe?
SINGER: Getting to know writers and works from a wide variety of European literary cultures.
HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?
SINGER: editor@trafikaeurope.org
HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
SINGER: editor@trafikaeurope.org
