My poem “What of the Work?” published by Citron Review (open for subs 2/1/25)

Tremendous thanks to Citron Review for publishing my poem “What of the Work?” in their Winter 2024/2025 issue. I wrote this poem in honor of a dear friend whom I worked closely with in many ways–our professional careers, personal challenges, raising our families, and her long-term fight with cancer, which she finally succumbed to in 2017.

I love the format of their issues, which includes separate sections for each genre, a letter from the editor, and notes on each selection. Not to mention, just a wonderfully pleasing aesthetic on their website!

Here are the kind notes from Editor-in-Chief/Poetry Editor Angela M. Brommel:

Trish Hopkinson’s “What of the Work?” centers on the relationship between solitude and great work, and if the solitude of loss would agree with that posit. She writes, Picasso said without great solitude no serious work / is possibleBut is there greatness in all forms of solitude? / What of the work we once created while side-by-side? /. While Hopkinson breathtakingly invites us into the current moment of the speaker, lush in detail, her final few lines are transcendent in reply.

The Citron Review started back in 2009 when a group of writers decided to create a literary venue that celebrates short literature. These writers had all graduated from the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at Antioch University in Los Angeles, where they were collectively known as The Citrons. So they named the journal The Citron Review. They publish new issues four times each year—in the spring, summer, fall, and winter, and will reopen for submissions on February 1.
