All of the contests below have no entry fees, except for the animal poetry contest, which is for a good cause and only $1 per poem to enter.

Animal Poetry Contest

DEADLINE: June 15, 2015

ENTRY FEE: $1/poem

NOTES: “Poems can be up to 40 lines and must be about an animal – be it domestic or wild. No limit on number of entries submitted. Previously published works are acceptable. All proceeds will go to Madison County Humane Society in Anderson, Indiana, to help with medical and cleaning expenses due to a virus that spread in the shelter that made many dogs very ill.

Send submissions, along with the entry fee and a cover sheet with name, address, email address, and titles of poems submitted, to: Animal Poetry Contest, 3121 Mounds Road, Anderson, Indiana, 46016. Make check payable to Madison County Humane Society.

FORMS:  Poetry

PRIZE: First place winner will receive a copy of the 1870 antique book: The Poetical Works of John Greenleaf Whittier, Volume II, a one year subscription to The Avocet: A Journal of Nature Poems, a complimentary copy of the July/August 2015 and September/October 2015 issues of Creative Inspirations, a Humane Society of the United States Christmas blanket, and $20. Second place winner will receive a one year subscription to The Avocet: A Journal of Nature Poems.

Mary Ballard Poetry Chapbook Prize

DEADLINE: June 30, 2015

ENTRY FEE: NONE

NOTES: “The winner of the Mary Ballard Poetry Chapbook Prize will receive $500 and 25 printed copies of the chapbook. The chapbook will be sold in both physical and electronic versions via a publishing contract with Casey Shay Press.”

“This is a chapbook competition for 20-40 pages of poetry. Entries with fewer than 20 pages will simply be discarded.”

SPS Studios Poetry Card Contest

DEADLINE: June 30, 2015

ENTRY FEE: NONE

NOTES: “Poems can be rhyming or non-rhyming, although we find that non-rhyming poetry reads better. We suggest that you write about real emotions and feelings and that you have some special person or occasion in mind as you write.”

FORMS:  Poetry

PRIZE: “1st prize: $300 * 2nd prize: $150 * 3rd prize: $50. In addition, the winning poems will be displayed on our website sps.com.”

Ekphrasis Prize for Poetry

DEADLINE: June 30, 2015

ENTRY FEE: NONE

NOTES: Postal entries only.

“Ekphrasis is a poetry journal looking for well-crafted poems, the main content of which addresses individual works from any artistic genre. Please identify the specific work that is the focus of your poem. Acceptable ekphrastic verse transcends mere description: it stands as transformative critical statement, an original gloss on the individual art piece it addresses.”

PRIZE: “Currently, a $500 consideration will be awarded to the winner of the Ekphrasis Prize for Poetry.”

2015 Mineral Point Poetry Chapbook Series

DEADLINE: June 30, 2015

ENTRY FEE: NONE

NOTES: The theme for this open reading period is “love poetry,” interpreted broadly. Submit manuscripts of 20-30 typed pages with no more than one poem per page.

“Brain Mill Press is a small, innovative publisher actively dedicated to producing a catalog of human experiences of love — all kinds of love — with a story-first approach in multiple genres. We have open submission calls a few times a year, and we host the Driftless Unsolicited novella contest in the late spring. At other times, submission is via invitation only.”

PRIZE: an honorarium of $250 plus royalties upon publication

Kingsley and Kate Tufts Poetry Awards

DEADLINE: July 1, 2015

ELIGIBILITY: U.S. Citizen, full-length poetry book published between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015

ENTRY FEE: NONE

NOTES: 8 copies of the book being entered must be mailed in.

“The Tufts poetry awards – based at Claremont Graduate University and given for poetry volumes published in the preceding year– are not only two of the most prestigious prizes a contemporary poet can receive.”

FORMS:  Poetry

PRIZE: $100,000 for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and $10,000 for the Kate Tufts Discovery Award.
