I’ve been gathering journals and magazines that publish work by older writers As always, a good poem is a good poem, and older writers publish everywhere. But sometimes it helps to know which journals specifically welcome or center work by writers over 50.

Many poets come to writing later in life or return to it after decades away. The literary world often feels youth-centered, but talent, clarity, and lived experience are not age-bound. Older poets bring depth and perspective that only time can shape, and while most journals accept work from writers of any age, it can be encouraging to know which ones specifically celebrate or uplift writers 50-plus.

This list includes lit mags and journals with no fee to submit that publish only older writers, journals that feature older writers in special issues, and journals that are known to be especially welcoming to mature voices. It’s not exhaustive, but it’s a solid starting point for poets who are 50-plus and looking for places to send their work.

Journals Specifically for Older Writers

• Passager Publishes writers 50-plus. Long-running, respected, and dedicated to showcasing the voices of older adults across poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Hard copy submissions are free. (There is a fee to submit electronic submissions via Submittable).
• Viridine Literary Founded in 2024, Viridine Literary was created to amplify the voices of new, emerging, and established writers, with a particular emphasis on older creatives. Noting the abundance of youth-focused journals, the editors intentionally welcome mature writers and encourage submissions from those over 30, believing talent and creativity are fully age-inclusive.
• Quartet Journal Publishes women 50-plus. Poetry-focused and one of the most widely known age-specific journals.
• Persimmon Tree Publishes women over 60. Features poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and art by older women.
• Thin Skin Publishes writers 50-plus. Historically prose-only, but now publishing poetry.
• Certain Age Publishes writers 50-plus. Submission windows vary.
• Gyroscope Review Publishes an annual Crone Issue focused on older women. Other issues skew older but are open to all ages.

Journals Welcoming to Older Writers

These journals aren’t age-restricted, but editors and contributors note that they are especially open to mature voices.

• Fahmidan Journal Fahmidan is always welcome to writers 50+ and is a paying market and open year-round. “We’ve published a good few since 2020 and 2 years back, we held the inaugural Fahmidan Mentorship exclusively from writers 45+ & Gen Z. Our oldest participant was 75 🙂 We want your writing whether you’re 18 or 88 and all good literary enterprises should! At Fahmidan Journal, we believe diversity means everyone is truly included, no matter race, age or whatever else.” Read more in my interview with their editor.
• Lit Shark Very welcoming to older writers, with recurring contributors in their 70s, 80s, and 90s.
• The Orchards Poetry Journal (Kelsay Books) Publishes formal and semi-formal poetry and has a strong representation of older poets. Not age-restricted, but widely known as welcoming to mature voices.
• University literary journals Multiple older writers report strong acceptance rates. Don’t discount university journals based on assumptions about readership. Click the link to see my list.

Additional Journals to Consider

• Senior Times Literary Section Publishes articles and poetry.
• Silver Birch Press Not exclusively age-focused, but well known for publishing themed series that often highlight work by older writers. They regularly feature poetry, flash, and hybrid pieces from mature voices, and their broad, accessible themes make them a welcoming option for poets 50-plus looking to place reflective or personal work.
• One Art Open year-round and very inclusive.
• Grey Sparrow Journal Not age-restricted, but known for publishing thoughtful, mature voices and work with emotional depth. Grey Sparrow has a long history of featuring poets of all ages, including many older writers, and is a welcoming option for poets 50-plus who write reflective or finely crafted poems.

Final Thoughts

Older poets are publishing everywhere. Many editors actively welcome mature voices, and many journals don’t ask for an author’s age at all. Still, if you’re looking for places that specifically celebrate writers over 50, the list above is a great place to start.
