What is World Poetry Day?

Created by UNESCO in 1999, World Poetry Day “recognizes the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind.”

How to participate

• Share a picture of your handwritten poem – selections will be posted on GuardianWitness, the home of user-generated content on The Guardian. Deadline is March 31, 2016.
• Read poetry! This article  on International Business Times is a great place to start and mentions some of my all-time favorite international poets: “World Poetry Day 2016: Famous non-English poets and their works you must read.”
• You can read more about it on Poets.org and browse a list of international festivals. There’s nothing specific to the United States, but there are happenings in several countries, including: U.K., Australia, Chile, Germany, Moscow, Hong Kong, Paris, Africa, Ireland, and Scotland.
• You can follow the World Poetry Day Facebook page for updates. They also post related articles, prompts, and other poetry information. You can also join the Facebook event here.
• You can pay for your Meinl coffee or tea with a poem
