Call for Submissions

NO FEE Submission call + editor interview – One Hand Clapping, DEADLINE: Always Open

One Hand Clapping is a new print and online literary magazine that offers great writing for free. “It aims to give a platform to unpublished and lesser-known writers by allowing them to share a space with those who are more established.” You can read their first issue here. For updates, follow them on Facebook.

For more info on how to submit to literary magazine and journals, read my Submission Tips here.

I wondered how and why this lit mag came to be, so I asked Editor Alan Humm a few questions to find out. See my interview with Humm and a link to their submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about One Hand Clapping.

HUMM: One Hand Clapping is a magazine that I set up in order to give new, unpublished and under-regarded authors a shot; they get to share a platform with more established – often famous – authors, and to be stocked in well-known book shops and literary festivals.

HOPKINSON: How/why was One Hand Clapping originally started?

HUMM: A lot of friends were being rejected for what seemed like terribly tenuous reasons. I wanted to try to make a difference.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

HUMM: Stories and poems. They need to be reasonably literary and, it should go without saying, well written. It needs to be work that’s good enough to share a space with the likes of Colm Toibin, Mark Doty and Les Murray. (These writers are all in the first issue.)

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

HUMM: I like the Paris Review and The New York Review of Books. Also The London Review of Books. Anything where the contributors can really write.

HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?

HUMM: This address: alan@theeditor-ohc.co.uk

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

HUMM: The same address. I’m always happy to answer questions.
