Parentheses Journal is a new online literary magazine recently founded by Sneha Subramanian Kanta and Harshal Desai. Their vision for the new journal is described as a “collaborative venture in the quest for sharing art, operating on the quintessence of art for art’s sake.”
I wondered how and why this journal came to be, so I asked co-founder Sneha Subramanian Kanta a few questions to find out. See my interview with Kanta and a link to their submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Parentheses Journal.
KANTA: The journal is a culmination of efforts in the quest for offering a space for hybrid identities to belong. It operates within the quintessence of art for art’s sake. It is a place where one can share their idiosyncrasies and everydays. There is a restless quality that comes out of a space of creation and we intend to record the rooted sense of pluralities one might experience, in the process.
HOPKINSON: How/why was Parentheses Journal originally started?
KANTA: The germination, if you like, began early last year. I intended to create a space for artists to create more spaces for themselves. This can be inferred in various ways. Parentheses Journal began as an aspiration for wanting the mundane, unseen, unheard everyday life, as they culminate into being experiences of life. It is a space for everything: as broad a term as a mountain range and as small as a pebble.
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
KANTA: We are particularly fascinated by literature from the margins, avant-garde, experimental narratives and art that seeks to transcends boundaries. We are open to receiving submissions that straddle these genres and beyond. I, as editor, am particularly drawn towards narratives that seek to stretch a given moment, poetry that is both; conversational and possesses density. We particularly encourage submissions of art as we feel that the world needs more art than ever. That told, feel free to send us your work. We are open to a multitude of sensibilities.
HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?
KANTA: There are many to name but here are a few: 805 lit, Boston Accent Lit, Noble / Gas Qtrly, Peacock Journal, Dying Dahlia Review, Soc Rouge Review, Rise Up Review, Anti-Heroin Chic, Otoliths and many, many more.
HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?
