Call for Submissions

NO FEE Submission call + editor interview – Whiskey Island, DEADLINE: Nov. 15, 2017

Whiskey Island Magazine is a well-established print literary magazine that’s been around in for over 30 years.

They have a respectable roster of contributing writers, including some of my favorites: Mary Ruefle, Maggie Smith, Steve Almond, Chiara Barzini, Denise Duhamel, Roxane Gay, Anne Germanacos, Matt Hart, Bob Hicok, Dora Malech, Karyna McGlynn, John McNally, Alissa Nutting, Aurelie Sheehan, Wendy Xu, Leni Zumas, and many others. You can purchase past issues for as little as $4 via their Submittable page.

I wondered how and why this lit mag came to be, so I asked Editor-in-Chief Bronte Billings a few questions to find out. See my interview with Billings and a link to their submission guidelines below.

For more info on how to submit to literary magazine and journals, read my Submission Tips here.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Whiskey Island.

BILLINGS: Whiskey Island is a nonprofit literary magazine run out of Cleveland State University (CSU). The magazine itself is staffed and organized by CSU graduate students and has existed for over 30 years. The name itself was inspired by the island-turned-peninsula found at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. The magazine name is heavily inspired by the history of this peninsula has evolved from a distillery, dump, US Coast Guard Station, ship graveyard, to shanty Irish-immigrant town.

How/why was Whiskey Island originally started?

BILLINGS: Whiskey Island was originally started with the intention to share and produce literary works with the Cleveland State University student population, and the surrounding community. We wanted to cultivate literary excellence and promote creative ingenuity.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

BILLINGS: What we look for in a submission is something that’s a little quirky. We love lyricism, strong imagery, some hybrid experiments and a strong sense of “voice.” We like a little strangeness to our work.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

BILLINGS: Some of our favorite magazines are bone bouquet, grimoire, the Midwest Review, the Journal, and the Mid-American Review.

HOPKINSON: Where can folks send submissions?

BILLINGS: We are super easy to find on submittable: https://whiskeyisland.submittable.com/submit or you can find us at our website: https://www.whiskeyisland-magazine.com/

If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

BILLINGS: If anyone has any questions they can either message us through the website or through our email: whiskeyisland@csuohio.edu
