16 PAYING LIT MAGS – Deadlines: Dec. 15 – Jan. 16, 2020

The literary magazines/journals listed below all offer some form of prize/payment, do not charge submission/reading fees, take online submissions, and have submission deadlines between today and January 16, 2020.

This list focuses on poetry submissions, but most lit mags accept prose and art as well. The listings are in order of closest deadlines.


Eye to the Telescope

DEADLINE: December 15, 2019

SUBMISSION FEE: None

THEME: Crossroads: “poems that pay homage to the supernatural nature of the crossroads: poems that embody the heaviness and darkness that seem to emanate from the crossroads of fantasy”

THEME: All Systems Go. For this issue, we are looking for any and all interpretations of this theme, including writing that wrestles with systems of every kind: from government and economics, systems of liberation and oppression, to the workings of the body and the natural universe. Systems govern and contain technology, pop culture, healthcare, family, and more. They are often the means by which human progress, innovation, and solidarity are enacted.”

PAYMENT: “Payment is made on publication at the rate of $10 per line (with a minimum payment of $300), and $150 per page of prose, for first serial rights.”

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019 (rolling)

SUBMISSION FEE: None

FORMS: poetry, short plays, short stories, postcard/flash fiction, art and literature reviews, critical essays, interviews, sketches, photos, etc.

PAYMENT: “A small honourarium to writers and artists upon publication. The exact rates vary by length of submission, but will include a copy of Existere (minimum).”

Carrion Blue 555

THEME: Speculative fiction that grapples with the question: “What is the legacy and the future of Africa and the African Diaspora?”

FORMS: Poetry, fiction, reprints are okay

FORMAT: online and print

PAYMENT:

  • POETRY: Any length paid $50USD per poem.
  • REPRINTS: Any length of poetry paid $15USD and 1,000-17,500 words of fiction paid $0.01USD per word.
  • FICTION: 1,000-17,500 words paid $0.08USD per word for the first 1,000 words, and $0.01USD above 1,000 words.

The Stacy Doris Memorial Poetry Award

DEADLINE: January 1, 2020

SUBMISSION FEE: None

PAYMENT: “The winning poet will receive $500 and publication in the Spring 2019 issue of Fourteen Hills.”

  1. Existere no longer exists, given the four-oh-ones on each issue.

    Since the publications pay different rates, I have to determine which of my poems are ten dollars each, other five dollars each and at the top, which would be a twenty-thirty-or-fifty dollar poem. Of course I could just take whatever I could get, but one cent a word? Five bucks a poem, and not to mention the numbers involved in an honorarium .
