Lanke Review is an online literary and art magazine founded in 2020 by J. Lan, “seeking prose, poetry, and art submissions that align with (but not necessarily having to follow) the theme for each issue.” The theme for their first issue is “Time.”
They are currently also looking for volunteer poetry readers, staff artists, and translators. You can apply on their About page. See my interview Editor-in-Chief J. Lan and a link to submission guidelines below.
HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about Lanke Review.
LAN: Lanke Review takes its name from an old Chinese myth describing the passing of time! It’s this concept of fleeting time and the truth within that we want to share with the world.
HOPKINSON: How/why was Lanke Review originally started?
LAN: Lanke Review was started because I was fascinated by the ways we can capture time. We have photographs, art, relics of the past to give the passing of time a presence–and it’s this feeling of holding time that I want to convey through Lanke Review. Memory, nostalgia, and truth all color our experiences. Being a writer and poet myself, I want to encourage others to share their voices with the world.
HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?
LAN: Readers of all ages are welcome to Lanke Review!
HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?
LAN: We are seeking submissions that align with (but not necessarily having to follow) the theme for each issue. We want works that takes us through time, art that sweeps us away, and a voice that rings. We want words rebirthed & grown from memories, and quiet & soulful visuals that make us breathless. We want to explore the limitless possibilities of the arts throughout time–whether in the past, present, or future, we want to hear your voice.
HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?
LAN: Historical fiction, for sure! We love the idea of traveling through time and space and settling down in the past. If you can make us feel entirely immersed in your world, we’ll take your submission in a heartbeat.
HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?
LAN: There are too many, but I’ll list a few–Gossamer Lit, Indigo Lit, Perhappened Mag, Opia Literary Magazine, Augment Review, and many more!
HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with Lanke Review?
LAN: We love the diversity of submissions that come through and that our magazine can bring so many voices together from all over the world. It’s great to see everyone’s take on the subject and the way they engage with the sea.
HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?
LAN: Please email all submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
LAN: Feel free to reach out to us directly on Twitter at @lankereview. Any questions may also be submitted to our website in our question forms. Email is also fine!
