Feminist Lit Mag/Journal

Two of my poems published in POETiCA REViEW + submissions open!

I couldn’t be more honored to have two new poems published in the Spring 2022 issue of POETiCA REViEW alongside two other Rock Canyon Poets members, Marianne Hales Harding and Barbara Tyler:

  • “Couples Therapy: Duncan Yo-yo Speaks to its String” and “Scale of Life” by Trish Hopkinson
  • “Ultramarine,” “All the Photos I Didn’t Take,” and “Line Drawing” by Barbara Tyler
  • “Pandemic Epiphragm, Spring 2020” by Marianne Hales Harding

It’s so exciting to have our poems published together after years of working together on poetry advocacy, poetry events, and of course, workshopping our own poems. The whole issue is equally impressive, including many other poets I know and admire, including Colorado poet and friend Kierstin Bridger.

POETiCA REViEW is a new online poetry journal with fast response times of one week to one month, that “hope[s] to give voice to the myriad of disparate voices within the artistic community, locally, and internationally, regardless of notoriety or who is currently favoured by this or that magazine. Our mission is to inject new blood into the poetry scene.” You can read previous issues online to get a feel for what they like to publish. They are open year-round to submissions of poetry.

For more information, see my interview with Editor Mark A. Murphy and a link to submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about POETiCA REViEW.

MURPHY: We created POETiCA REViEW to challenge the canon makers and the prevailing order in the poetry world. We believe the great and the good are not untouchable. We believe anybody can and should do poetry without any social restrictions. Our mission is to reach out to ordinary people, who might not otherwise consider themselves as poets. We are all poets in our own unique ways and have a right to be taken seriously by the poetry establishment.

HOPKINSON: How/why was POETiCA REViEW originally started?

MURPHY: We are rank outsiders, who believe in giving voice to the historically misrepresented and culturally disenfranchised. We encourage the production of art by everyone.

HOPKINSON: Who is your target reader audience?

MURPHY: Our target audience is open ended. We are looking for anyone interested in reading poetry for poetry’s sake, and or as a vehicle for challenging current trends.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

MURPHY: We are looking for work that is universal in its appeal, rather than esoteric, or what is currently fashionable. We are not interested in poetry cliques, or what is considered in vogue by the poetry establishment. We are not afraid to get our hands dirty, and welcome social and political protest poetry. We believe poetry can save lives and nations and effect change.

HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?

MURPHY: We have a great fondness for ekphrastic poetry and would love to see more. Also prose poetry and the short form are always welcome.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

MURPHY: The Ekphrastic Review, The American Dissident, The Awakenings Review, Dead Drunk Dublin, Left Curve, Red Banner, Struggle, Poets Against War, Protest Poems, Writers Resist, Shot Glass Journal, Bijou Poetry Review, Proletaria Journal to name but a handful.

HOPKINSON: Where can poets send submissions?

MURPHY: See our Submission Guidelines here:

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?
