Poetry Classes

From Spark to Submission / Online Workshop with Trish Hopkinson – Nov. 8 & 15, 2026

Writers looking to generate new work, strengthen their craft, and learn how to navigate the literary submission process are invited to join me for a two-session online workshop this November. I’m delighted to partner again with Oyster River Pages (ORP), a literary nonprofit known for championing underrepresented voices, offering fee-free submissions, and publishing work with clarity, presence, and heart.

If you follow my site, you may remember my earlier feature and interview with ORP’s Poetry Editor Eneida Alcalde. That conversation explored ORP’s mission, editorial approach, and commitment to accessible publishing. ORP will reopen for submissions in early 2027, making this workshop an ideal way to prepare your strongest work ahead of their next reading period.

Workshop Overview

From Spark to Submission is designed for poets, prose writers, hybrid writers, and anyone interested in developing new work while learning practical strategies for submitting to literary magazines. Across two sessions, we’ll explore generative writing, guided prompts, readings, and the full lifecycle of preparing and sending out your work.

Topics include:

  • Generative writing rooted in memory, curiosity, and lived experience
  • Guided prompts to help you draft new poems or prose
  • Poetry readings aligned with ORP’s mission
  • Submission strategies for finding journals and preparing your work
  • Publication as practice and how to integrate submissions into your creative life
  • Community connection with writers across genres

Scholarships

ORP is offering a limited number of partial scholarships to support writers who need financial assistance. Scholarships are first-come, first-served. To apply, email schools@oysterriverpages.com before registering or submitting payment.

About Oyster River Pages

Founded in 2017, Oyster River Pages publishes poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art from contributors around the world. Their commitment to fee-free submissions, editorial transparency, and programs like Emerging Voices sets them apart in the independent literary landscape. ORP also offers classes, workshops, panels, and an internship program through ORP Schools, fostering community and craft year-round. If you missed my earlier feature, you can revisit it here: ORP Interview.

Meet Your Instructor

The interview on The Poetry Vessel offers a thoughtful look into my creative process, advocacy work, and the imaginative frameworks that shape my poetry. Nathan Hassall and I talk about building literary community, navigating vulnerability in writing, and the role of myth and persona in craft. I also read from A Godless Ascends, and we explore how lyric and narrative intersect in my work.
