NO FEE Poetry Book Awards + other resources

Below is a list of no fee poetry book contests. Note that these will require entrants to snail mail one or more copies of the book being entered. Read the guidelines carefully. Some are restricted to poets connected to specific geographical areas.

Here are some specific no fee listings poetry book awards:

Levis Reading Prize

ANNUAL DEADLINE: February 1

ENTRY FEE: None

PRIZE/AWARD: The winner receives an honorarium of $5000 and are invited, expenses paid, to Richmond to present a public reading in the following fall.

GLCA New Writers Awards

OPEN: February – June (specific dates available each year)

ENTRY FEE: None

PRIZE/AWARD: Each writer receives an honorarium of at least $500 from each college visited, as well as travel expenses, hotel accommodations, and hospitality. By accepting the award the winner is committed to visit member colleges that extend invitations.

Paterson Poetry Prize

ANNUAL DEADLINE: February 1 (specific date may change each year)

ENTRY FEE: None

PRIZE/AWARD: $1,000 award for a book of poems, 48 pages or more in length, selected by our judges as the strongest collection of poems published in 2018. The winning poet will be eligible for the monetary prize only if he/she participates in a reading at Poetry Center on the date specified.

Paterson Poetry Prize

ANNUAL DEADLINE: February 1 (specific date may change each year)

PRIZE/AWARD: $1,000 award for a book of poems, 48 pages or more in length, selected by our judges as the strongest collection of poems published in 2018. The winning poet will be eligible for the monetary prize only if he/she participates in a reading at Poetry Center on the date specified.

Milton Kessler Poetry Book Award

ANNUAL DEADLINE: February 1 (specific date may change each year)

PRIZE/AWARD: $1,000 Award for a book of poems written in English, 48 pages or more in length, selected by our judges as the strongest collection of poems published in the previous year.

Griffin Poetry Prize

ANNUAL DEADLINE: June 30 & December 31 (for books published up to 6 months before each deadline)

PRIZE/AWARD: The Griffin Poetry Prize, valued at C$200,000, is awarded annually in two categories – International and Canadian. Each prize is worth C$65,000. In each category, the prize is for the best collection of poetry in English published during the preceding year. One prize goes to a living Canadian poet or translator, the other to a living poet or translator from any country, which may include Canada. C$10,000 goes to each shortlisted poet who reads at the annual Griffin Poetry Prize Shortlist Readings in Toronto, Canada.

Kate Tufts Discovery Award (for a 1st book)

ANNUAL DEADLINE: July 1 (specific date may change each year)

PRIZE/AWARD: It is presented to a first book by a poet of genuine promise.  The Kate Tufts Discovery Award offers a hefty prize of $10,000.

Kingsley Tufts Award

ANNUAL DEADLINE: July 1 (specific date may change each year)

PRIZE/AWARD: $100,000 for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award

California Book Awards

OPEN: September 15 – December 15 (specific dates may change each year)

ENTRY FEE: None

PRIZE/AWARD: Monetary prizes are given in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, juvenile literature, young adult literature, first work of fiction, Californiana and notable contribution to publishing.

UNT Rilke Prize

ANNUAL DEADLINE: November 30 (specific date may change each year)

PRIZE/AWARD: An annual award of a $10,000 recognizing a book that demonstrates exceptional artistry and vision written by a mid-career poet and published in the preceding year.

Society of Midland Authors Awards

ANNUAL DEADLINE: around end of year, check site for specific date

PRIZE/AWARD: $500, awards ceremony around May for previous year’s books winners

Hefner Heitz Kansas Book Award (alternates years for Nonfiction, Poetry, and Fiction)

ANNUAL DEADLINE: December 31 (Note: 2019 is Poetry)

PRIZE/AWARD: $1,000, awards ceremony

American Book Awards

ANNUAL DEADLINE: December 31

PRIZE/AWARD: No cash prize, but a notable award to receive!

  1. this provides no year. I got involved with something similar once a few years back….ended up a scam, yes they publish a book with your poem which YOU paid for.
