Below are the details for eighteen free poetry contests in the order of the upcoming deadlines in December 2019. The contests are listed in order of deadline and in two sections: 1) open to most, 2) open to specific region, identity, etc.

NOTES: No simultaneous submissions

FORMAT: print, digitally online

SUBMISSION FEE: None

CONTEST PRIZES: 1st – $100, 2nd – $50, 3rd – $25

New York Encounter Poetry Contest

DEADLINE: December 2, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

THEME: Crossing the Divide

PRIZE: Cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100 will be awarded to first, second and third place poems.

Kent State University Peace Poetry Contest

DEADLINE: December 15, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the May 4 shootings. The poems should resonate with the themes of peace, conflict transformation, and student advocacy. Three categories: youth (K-12), adult student, or adult non-student

PRIZE: “Poet, songwriter, and novelist, Naomi Shihab Nye, will select one winner from each category who will receive $500 and a possibility to read their poems at Kent State during the May 4 Music and Poetry Event on April 21. Two poets will receive honorable mention prizes for $250 and a possibility to read their poems at Kent State during the April 21 event. All winners will have their poems set to a musical composition by students in the Kent State University School of Music.”

Blue Mountain Arts Poetry Card Contest

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

PRIZE: 1st prize: $350 * 2nd prize: $200 * 3rd prize: $100

Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Books must be written in English and published and copyrighted in 2019 to be eligible for the 2020 prize. Awards are given in fiction, poetry and nonfiction.

PRIZE: Award recipients traditionally receive $10,000 from the Anisfield-Wolf fund.

Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry, Griffin Poetry Prize

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Poetry books entered must have been published in English during the calendar year preceding the year of the award.

PRIZE: C$200,000, is awarded annually in two categories – International and Canadian. Each prize is worth C$65,000

Society of Classical Poets, Poetry Translation Competition

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

PRIZE: $100

NO FEE Contests open to specific region, identity, etc. 

The Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poetry

DEADLINE: December 1, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Open to African poets who have not yet published a collection of poetry.

PRIZE: $1,000

Women Artists Datebook

DEADLINE: December 15, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Inspirational poems that “promote activism and/or healing” by writers who self-identify as women

PRIZE: $70

Commonwealth Club of California Book Awards

DEADLINE: December 15, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Open to residents of California

PRIZE: Medals are awarded in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, First Work of Fiction, Californiana, Young Adult Literature (ages 12–16), Juvenile Literature (ages up to 11) and Notable Contribution to Publishing.

Four Way Books – It’s No Contest

DEADLINE: December 15, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Poetry or Fiction by a NYC Resident

PRIZE: unknown

Rider University Annual High School Writing Contest

DEADLINE: December 15, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Postal submissions only. Open to high school students.

PRIZE: 1st-$100, 2nd-$50, 3rd-$25.

Black Caucus of the American Library Association

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: African American writer published in the United States during the previous year: one for adult fiction, one for nonfiction, one for a first novelist and one for poetry.

PRIZE: $500

Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Open to poets of color who have not previously published a book-length volume of poetry.

PRIZE: $350, 15 copies of the chapbook, and a featured reading at The Poetry Foundation.

Society of Classical Poets, High School Poetry Competition

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Open to high school students. The poems must be within the four themes used by the Society.

PRIZE: $100

The Lyric College Poetry Contest

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Open to undergraduates enrolled full time in an American or Canadian college or university.

PRIZE: $500

William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition

DEADLINE: December 31, 2019

ENTRY FEE: None

NOTES: Open to students enrolled in programs leading to the Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree.

PRIZE: $300
