5 FREE POETRY CONTESTS – Deadlines February and March

Below are the details for five free poetry contests in the order of the upcoming deadlines in February and March. Also listed are links to other sites who list creative writing contests on a regular basis.

Prospero Prizes

DEADLINE: February 15, 2016

ELIGIBILITY: “This contest is open to everyone. However, the following individuals are NOT eligible to participate in this contest: the staff of Event Horizon and their immediate family.”

NOTES: 2016 theme is “The Night.” “Send us your poems, flash fiction, and visual art regarding nocturnes, sleep, bedfellows, revelry, fear and fasting, the wolf, sounds without account. And more. The very best groups of poems we receive under THE NIGHT topos will win the Prospero Prizes.”

FORMS: Poetry – maximum 5 single-spaced pages (one piece per page), maximum 50 lines per poem

PRIZE: “Prize(s) of $150 and feature publication in our digital magazines will be awarded for poems of philosophical and imaginative hefthaft, and polish.

Event Horizon Science Poetry Competition

DEADLINE: February 29, 2016

ELIGIBILITY: “This contest is open to everyone. However, the following individuals are NOT eligible to participate in this contest: the staff of Event Horizon and their immediate family.”

NOTES: “Submissions will be judged blindly by 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry finalist Alan Shapiro. Submissions will be judged equally on poetic craft and thematic relevance. The winner shall be notified a week before the general announcement.”

FORMS: up to three (3) original poems written in the English language, no line limit

PRIZE: “The winner will receive $500.00. In addition, the winning submission will be published in Event Horizon’s April 2016 issue.”

Carriage House Poetry Prize

DEADLINE: March 1, 2016

ELIGIBILITY: “Authors must be residents of Wisconsin, attend school in Wisconsin, or be a registered participant of the 2016 Lakefly Literary Conference. Members of the Lakefly Conference Planning Committee are not eligible to enter.”

NOTES: Postal entries only.

“In observance of Arbor Day, poems must contain reference to a tree or trees (not necessarily poems about trees). Any style or form. No re-writes or take-offs on Joyce Kilmer’s famous poem ‘Trees’. Judges will look for poems characterized by technical proficiency, striking imagery, and strong sound quality.”

FORMS: Poetry, 40 lines or less

PRIZE: $300

Binghamton University Milt Kessler Poetry Book Award

DEADLINE: March 1, 2016

ELIGIBILITY: “Publisher or author may submit. Author needs to have a U.S. social security number for the prize to be awarded.”

NOTES: Collections of poems published in 2015, 48 pages or more in length

FORMS: Poetry – full-length collection

PRIZE: $1,000

Foley Poetry Contest

DEADLINE: March 31, 2016

ELIGIBILITY: No restrictions listed, assume poetry must be in English

NOTES: No simultaneous submissions.

FORMS: Poems less than 30 lines

PRIZE: $1,000 + the winning poem will be published in the June 6-13, 2016 issue of America
