My review of Pretty Owl Poetry’s Summer issue just went up on The Review Review! Just last year I sent a request to join the ranks of the literary reviewers on their site and this is the third lit mag they’ve asked me to read and write about. The first two were print issues, meaning, not only did it give me motivation to read a new lit mag from cover to cover, but I received them for no cost!
If you aren’t familiar with The Review Review, set aside an hour or two with a glass of your favorite adult beverage and check out the amazing amounts of information they provide. Including:
- Reviews of lit mags and journals
- A directory of magazines with detailed summaries and links
- Interviews with a variety of editors, writers, etc.
- Tons of articles on publishing tips
- Calls for submissions and other writing related classifieds
Here’s a snippet from my review:
The poems continue with sonic pleasure and dense descriptions to pull the reader through, make them stop to chew a bit, review, go back, move forward some to the end of each poem with a yearning for more. There are poems by Gage Ledbetter—narratives that unravel like hemp on a spool and miniature prose poems—the earth and sky shining through between the lines and space bar taps. These poems/stories will make you ache for the time you wasted watching Orange is the New Black episodes last night and for those moments you blew off scrolling through political garbage in whatever newsfeed haunts you. “My god is an uncomfortable one,” and “I used to rely on fire much more, but / now I hide it in the walls, next to / my self that is always thawing, never thawed,” indeed.

Pretty Owl Poetry accepts submissions electronically through Submittable and requests up to three to five poems, three works of flash fiction less than 2,000 words, and visual art. Their turnaround time appears to range from one to three months, which can be verified in their Duotrope listing. Their acceptance rate is fairly competitive and sits at about 5%, so make sure to send your best work. Simultaneous submissions are welcome and they are open for submissions year round.
