Interviews

FREE ENTRY – Poetry contest & editor interview ($500+ in cash prizes) – concīs, DEADLINE: Sept. 3, 2017

I recently came across concīs, a fairly new lit mag that not only pays contributors, but also supports Room to Read, an organization dedicated to educating children in need in Asia and Africa. You can opt to donate your payment and concīs will double it. They also provide a Donation Tracker so you can see how much they have donated so far.

And now they are running their second annual contest with no entry fees! Same donation opportunities apply to you can donate with your entry if you’d like to contribute. Not only are there cash prizes, but you’ll also receive postcards featuring your winning work and publication in a special digital issue.

  1. First Prize: $250 cash and highlighted publication in concīs (web and digital editions).
  2. Second Prize: $150 cash and highlighted publication in concīs (web and digital editions).
  3. Third Prize: $100 cash and highlighted publication in concīs (web and digital editions).
  4. Editor’s Choice(s): $25 cash and highlighted publication in concīs (web and digital editions).

I wondered how and why this lit mag came to be, so I asked founder and editor Chris Lott a few questions to find out. See my interview with Lott and a link to their contest guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about concīs.

LOTT: concīs is an online journal devoted to brevity regardless of genre, concision without concern for category.

HOPKINSON: How/why was concīs originally started?

LOTT: For as long as I can remember I’ve adored short form writing of all kinds and, despite the explosion of quality online publications since my last foray into the field (I co-founded Eclectica Magazine more than 20 years ago), I felt there was space for a venue that embraced brief writing of all kinds, providing a wide-angle, but still focused view. I also wanted to honor writers by paying them for their work and featuring each individually… and selfishly explore a spare, minimalist, “simple but not simple-minded” aesthetic and production that matches the writing.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

LOTT: We are open to poems, prose poems, flash fiction/hint fiction/sudden fiction/quicktions, micro-essays, short forms, “fictional text objects” (as Gary Lutz described them), erasures, found texts and poems, visual work in which words feature prominently. Our only firm requirement is adhering to the length limit of 25 lines or 250 words or less. In every other way we welcome surprise and really value charged language that is experimental but understandable, surprising but not necessarily terrifying. I encourage authors to read from our Seasonal anthologies (https://concis.io/seasons/) and browse our Inspirations page (https://concis.io/about/inspirations/) before submitting.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite lit mags/journals?

LOTT: We live in a time of such reading riches! A few off the top of my head, primarily online, and in no particular order: One Sentence Poems, right hand pointing, NANO Fiction, 100 word story, cahoodaloodling, SmokeLong Quarterly, Vestal Review, The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts, PANK, Eclectica Magazine

HOPKINSON: Where can folks send contest entries?

LOTT: Contest (and regular) submissions are always free via Submittable: https://concis.submittable.com/submit

HOPKINSON: If someone has a question, how can they contact you?

LOTT: I’m happy to answer questions via email to chris@concis.io or messages to our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/concismag/
