Call for Submissions

34 PAYING/NO FEE Submission calls in May 2018 + more from Publishing and Other Forms of Insanity

Publishing … and Other Forms of Insanity is the blog and writing resource site by writer Erica Verrillo. Her site is loaded with great articles for writers and the writing life, including listings of publishers, agents, where to get reviews, submission calls, free contests, writing conferences and more.

This list of 34 paying submission calls includes several for poets and are listed in order of their deadlines, from May 1 – May 31, 2018. For more paying markets you can find Verillo’s complete list, organized by genre and subject matter here: Paying Markets.

Erica Verrillo has written seven books and published five. She doesn’t know why anyone with an ounce of self-preservation would ever want to publish. But, if you insist on selling your soul to the devil, learn how to do it right: marketing, literary agents, book promotion, editing, pitching your book, how to get reviews, and … most important of all … everything she did wrong. In the interests of protecting the right to free speech, she did not vote for Trump. #NotMyPresident

  1. Here’s another call for submission for May. Also paying. Also no required fee.

    Here’s the blurb and link:

The Literary Taxidermy Short Story Competition is open to all. To enter, writers must provide an original story of up to 3000 words in any genre. The catch: We provide your opening and closing lines chosen from a classic work of literature. You provide the rest.

Three winning stories will be selected, for a total prize of US $1500. In addition, winners and runners-up will be published by Regulus Press in a forthcoming 2018 Anthology of Literary Taxidermy.

The judges of the 2018 contest include a variety of writers, poets, and playwrights, including Catherine Barnett (The Game of Boxes), Kelley Eskridge (Solitaire), Stephen Graham Jones (Mongrels), Holly Kowitt (The Principal’s Underwear Is Missing), Brian Parks (“Americana Absurdum”), Michael Pronko (The Last Train), Becky Selengut (Good Fish), and Nisi Shawl (Everfair). There is no required entry fee.

Entries to the competition close on 4 June 2018. Winners will be announced in September 2018. For full details visit the Literary Taxidermy Short Story Competition website:
