NO FEE podcast submission call + producer interview – A Moment of Your Time, DEADLINE: Year-round

A Moment Of Your Time is a daily podcast of short episodes, two to six minutes long, where contributors read a short story, poem, original dialogue, or share music. The underlying theme is positive or through a lens of solidarity and hope. You can listen to the first 120+ episodes on their site to get a feel for what they are looking for.

I wanted to more about how this podcast came to be, so I asked producer Jenny Curtis a few questions to find out. See my interview with Curtis and a link to submission guidelines below.

HOPKINSON: Tell me a little bit about A Moment Of Your Time.

CURTIS: This daily podcast is made of "bite-sized" episodes, approximately 1-5 minutes, featuring the creative self-expression of the contributors. We have pieces of creative writing, personal statements, poetry, music and more.

HOPKINSON: How/why was A Moment Of Your Time originally started?

CURTIS: A Moment Of Your Time was born out of the need for a creative and positive outlet during this time of isolation. The idea is that this is a celebration of individuality and solidarity.

When quarantine began, I was doing an unprecedented amount of 'panic scrolling' through the news and I needed to find a way to divert my energy into something healing – to put some good out into the world. Knowing that I needed a place of encouragement turn my attention to, I thought that the best thing I could do would be to offer that space to others. So A Moment Of Time began.

HOPKINSON: Who is your target audience?

CURTIS: Those looking for a little hope, a little inspiration, a community of support and an outlet for creativity.

HOPKINSON: What type of work are you looking for?

CURTIS: I’m always looking for more true, personal stories (a la The Moth). We’ve had some really beautiful pieces about overcoming challenges, family, learning, self love, humanity and more. I personally find these stories – the ones that are very specific, most appealing and moving. It’s also a joy to receive humorous submissions – I’d love to encourage people not to shy away from sharing funny stories or pieces.

Unique and creative stories (both fiction and personal), poetry, music, letters and other pieces. This is a place to share a bit of your heart and soul. We aren't looking to put a cap on creativity and are happy to discuss ideas with contributors who have questions!

What we aren't looking for are pieces that judge others or tell them how they should be behaving, pieces that are solely vague sweeping statements, or pieces that are regurgitating information without a point of view. These do not have to be pandemic related, though they can be.

HOPKINSON: What do you wish you’d see submitted, but rarely comes in?

CURTIS: This is hard to answer, because I love being surprised by the creative pieces that are submitted–things I would not even have thought to ask for. I will say though, I'd love to receive more pieces of storytelling and personal experiences.

HOPKINSON: What are some of your favorite podcasts?

CURTIS: The MothTerrible Thanks for Asking, and Memory Palace. Gotta love those beautifully told stories and moving experiences.

HOPKINSON: What is your favorite part of being on staff with A Moment Of Your Time?

CURTIS: This experience has been immensely inspiring to me. Like most people, this pandemic threw me completely into a spiral of anxiety and depression. This project, however, has connected me to people around the world who show me every day that together we can overcome and that no one is alone as long as we continue to reach out to one another. I have had the gift of producing a sketch with a teacher across the country from me, connecting with other podcasters as near as my own city and as far as the U.K, learning about exciting companies doing good deeds, reading poetry from Australia, highlighting works of talented young artists'all with people I would never have connected to otherwise. The community that is rapidly growing from this project has spread hope, inspired creativity and being a part of it has been nothing short of a gift.

It’s been really lovely to see the outpouring of support. People who have contributed have stuck around to listen to & support fellow contributors. Part of the goal here really was to form a creative community and it’s been a joy to see that side develop.

The 100th episode we released was a “thank you” piece from me – so if you’d like to hear my mushy feelings on the show, that’s certainly a place you can find it!

HOPKINSON: Where can we send submissions?
